Sage’s Latin binomial name is Salvia Officinalis with the word Salvia meaning “to cure”, “to save” and “to heal”. Other ancient cultures also translated Salvia to mean “sacred”.
Sage holds significant spiritual properties with its smoke believed to protect against negative energy.
Although burning sage ("smudging") has been classed as “new age”, new research is scientifically proving that there are actually incredible benefits in using these rituals that the Native Americans (as well as many other indigenous groups) have known of and used without question for thousands of years.
Recent studies have shown that due to Sage's powerful antiseptic qualities, its smoke can purify 94% of harmful bacteria in the air around us.
Burning Sage works by neutralizing the positive charge of ions in and around our body and environment by releasing enough negative ions into the atmosphere to balance them. This means that our own energy, and the energy of the space we are burning the Sage in, will feel much lighter afterwards.
